This paper discusses the planning, design, and start-up of the 90 tph PCI facility for National Steel's Great Lakes Steel Division in River Rouge, MI. This project is owned and operated by Edison Energy Services, and was implemented on a fast-track basis by Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, Babcock Material Handling, and Babcock & Wilcox. This paper present improtant process issues, basic design criteria, and the challenges of engineering and building a state-of-the-art PCI facility in two existing plants. Pulverized coal is prepared at the River Rouge Power Plant of Detroit Edison, is pneumatically conveyed 6,000 feet to a storage silo at Great Lakes Steel, and is injected into three blast furnaces.
