An investigation was made to evaluate the heat transfer coefficient between molten pure iron and nickel and a water cooled copper chill during the first 0.5 seconds of solidification to develop a fundamental understanding of the factors controlling strip cast surface quality. In addition, the surface contour of the castings was measured.
