EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR CONTROL SYSTEM

Over the past three years, Foxboro Site Survey Teams have assessed the condition of SPEC 200 and SPECTRUM equipment which has been installed for some 20 to 27 years. This paper presents experience gained from over fifteen (15) site surveys performed at process control plants, ranging from oil refineries in Texas to chemical plants in South America. Due to the requirements of confidentiality, the names of the companies, their plants, and their locations are intentionally missing. The subject of wear-out in electronic systems has been presented and details from Reliability Site Surveys have been shared. Some non-technical issues, caused by the practice of using systems beyond their design life, were also presented.
