The first electrophotographic copy "10.-22.-38 Astoria" was made by Carlson and Kornei using a photoreceptor comprised of sulfur coated on a zinc plate. The Haloid XeroX Copier Model A introduced in 1949 used an #alpha# -Se plate and the Xerox 914 Copier introduced in 1959 used an #alpha# -Se drum as the photoreceptor. Organic photoreceptors had their beginnings with Kalle in the late 1950s followed in 1970 by the IBM Copier I which used the charge-transfer complex between ply(N-vinylcarbazole) and 2, 4, 7-trinitrofluorenone. In the 1980s #alpha# -Si was developed as a photoreceptor and an #alpha# -Si drum was used in the Canon NP-755 introduced in 1984. In the ensuing time to the present there has been rapid development of photoreceptors for use in all segments of the copier/printer market. For a variety of reasons, phtot-recptors based on chalcogenides and their alloys have been deemphasized with most of the progress coming in #alpha# -Si and organic photoreceptors. This paper will discuss the evolution of photoreceptor technology, focusing mainly on #alpha# -Si and organic photorecptors, and the new demands placed on the photoreceptor by digital printing processes.
