Using a recently developed Glow Discharge Lamp and a spectrograph otpimised for the short wavelength range, an investigation of the possibilities to determien low levels of oxygen in steel and copper was carried out. Spectra from steel and copper samples with a varying content of oxygen were recorded and analysed using hte 1302.17 A line. From this the background equivalent concentration was determined to be 83 ppm for steel and 25 ppm for copper. The background equivalents obtained are low enough to allow detection nrmally down to ppm levels. Some special problems are encountered, however; these will be discussed and they will also be the subject of further investigations.
