On the Use of Composites for Bridge Renewal: Materials, Manufacturing and Durability

Fiber reinforced polymer matrix composites are increasingly being considered for use in bridge renewal due to factors ranging from mechanical performance and durability to lighter weight and faster construction potential. A number of demonstration projects have been completed in this area in Europe, Japan and the United States. However, there is still a critical lack of understanding of aspects related to the appropriate selection of materials, manufacturing processes and overall durability associated with the use of such materials. This paper discusses a number of these issues with special emphasis on materials and process selection metrics.
