McKinleyville Bridge, located in Brooke County in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, is the first vehicular bridge in this country whose concrete deck is reinforced with FRP rebars. The construction of this bridge was recently completed and opened to traffic beginning October 1996. The purpose of using FRP rebars was to increase the life of the bridge deck by eliminating corrosion of steel reinforcing as a cause of deck deterioration. The bridge was load tested before opening to traffic using three trucks each weighing 245 kN, 245 kN and 120 kN, respectively. The maximum deflection in the mid-span was around span/2000 limits. The maximum stress in one FRP rebar was within 20percent of the ultimate stress.
