Pull-Out Behaviour of FRP Ground Anchors

Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic (FRP) tendons have recently been introduced in the market for grouted ground anchors. The resistance to corrosion and chemical attacks, high strength-to-weight ratio and ease of handling of these tendons make them a better alternative to steel in some applications of grouted anchors. However, to utilise fully FRP tendons for cement grouted anchors, some aspects of their behaviour have to be determined, including tensile properties, load carrying capacity, bond strength in cement grout, long term strength, and durability. In this paper, tensile properties, bond strength and pull-out behaviour of AFRP and CFRP tendons embedded in cement grout are discussed in comparison with steel anchor strands. The pull-out tests were conducted on four types of FRP tendons and two types of steel strands installed in different host media. The experimental results have shown that the tensile properties of FRP tendons as given by manufacturers were close to the experimentally derived values. The load capacity of anchor increases with the increasing of anchoring length, compressive strength of cement grout and elastic modulus of host medium.
