Many diffusion coating applications require certain local areas of the parts being coated to be masked in order to avoid coating deposition. This typically applies to areas that are precision-machined or that need further processing (i.e., machining, braze, weld, overlay coatings or thermal spray), or where physical (thermal and electrical conductivity) and mechanical (fatigue strength) of the area must not be disturbed. Masking tapes and putties have been developed that are ready-to-use, offering efficient, cost-effective and easy methods for accurate and high-quality masking during high-temperature diffusion coatings such as aluminizing, chromizing, boronizing, etc. The composition is layered in such a way that the outer layer of the maskant protects the masked surface by getting the coating elements, while the inner layer in contact with the masked surface does not affect the chemistry, microstructure and mechanical properties of the area. It has been successfully applied on various materials (steel titanium alloys, nickel and cobalt-base superalloy.).
