Contact Angle in Characterization of Alloy Surface Preparations for Bondign to Dental Adhesive Resins

Adhesive resin bonding to alloys is an improtant dental application. Although bond strengths and adhesive theory do not aloways correlate, adhesive theory predicts increased bonding with increased surface energy of adherend. The purpose of this project was to determine and compare the surface energy of Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloys prepared under different conditions. Surface tension of alloys was calculated by an acid-base model. the surface contact angle of four well characterized liquids was determined by digitizing video images and solving the appropriate energy equation. It was found that contact angles decreased due to rinsing prepared surfaces, in the order, water > acetone > surfactant, and drying surfaces in the order, hot-air > pressurized argon > tissue wipe.
