This paper reports on the initial stages of a joint research project of the Universities of Oviedo and Madrid to be developed in the next two years. It deals with the micrographic structure that can be obtained by thixoforming of partially remelted wrought commercial bars. The steel used has a high carbon content and a wide solidification interval: M2 steel with 1%C, 4% Cr, 6%W, 5%Mo, 2%V, 0.37%Co. This is a commonly used high speed steel for drilling and milling.
