The hydraulic design of the sand trap is important in planning of hydropower plants using water from sediment-carrying rivers. It is necessary to ensure that the sand trap will function with sufficient efficiency. Physical modelling of sediment deposition in a sand trap is difficult because of practical problems when scaling small sediment particle.s The alternative, 3D numerical modeling, has previously been used for a steady stituation forboth free surface flow (Olsen and Skoglund, 1994) and a tunnel-type sand trap (Olsen and Chandrashekhar, 1995). The calculated concentration profiles from these studies compared well with laboratory measurements.
