The European Union directive on safety of machines (89/392/EEC, 91/368/EEC) defined new requirements for manufacturing of machines, and the availability of safety information for all machines marketed in the EU. Corresponding national legislationhas been applied in Finland since 1.1.1994 (revised 1.1.1995). The year 1994 was a transition time for new requirements. The directive covers various areas of safety, but we concentrated on the noise safety topics. It is stated that all machines should be manufactured so that the noise emission and vibration are as low as possible, regarding the means available and thedevelopment of technology. The noise emission and vibration acceleration must be measured and declared. Minimum requirement for noise declaration is that the emission pressure level at the operator's position is given. Further requirements are givendepending on the nature of the tool's noise emission.
