Noise pollution control and analysis in urban areas have to follow a double goal: both keeping the basic elements to protect exposed population and setting up the tools to plan a global noise remedial policy. In this frame an integrated approach, based on experimental techniques, statistical and modelling analyses, represents a good way to harmonise scientific needs and cost-benefit policies. Italian Ministry of the Environment has supported a large research project aimed to set up criteria andguidelines in noise pollution control and abatement strategies (DISIA Project: Atmospheric and Acoustic Depollution). The paper describes the experiment carried out in Milan urban area in order to test the optimal requirements for a noise monitoringnetwork.
