RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH QUALITY VINYL ESTER- AND ACRYLIC-BASED LATICES

The vinyl ester of Versatic 10 (a tertiary branched monocarboxylic acid containing 10 carbon atoms) is an ideal vinyl comonomer for the production of latices for high quality exterior and interior water-based paints. This vinyl ester is versatile as it can easily be incorporated via radical copolymerisation both in vinyl acetate- and in acrylic-based polymers. The incorporation of the unique highly branched hydrophobic structure enhances the final coating properties. Binder performance, which is also related to the preparation procedures and formulations used, has been upgraded taking environmental issues into consideration.
