ADVANCED CERAMICS IN THE U. S. FOR THE 21~(ST) CENTURY: PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES

While we cannot predict future developments, inventions, or discoveries, the unique properties of the wide expanse of materials that we call ceramics suggests that the potential for these materials in a myriad of applications is tremendous. The primary issue is one of how, together, we in this country can help lower the barriers to their future development and utilization. We suggest that participation by companies, universities, and national laboratories in a measurements-oriented, national, infrastructure is one method of strengthening the role of ceramics in the U.S. in the 21~(st) century.
