Wireless Communication Carriers have become the important players in the ever-expanding telecommunication industry in recent years. The Mobile Cellular Networks, along with new entrants such as Personal Communication Services (PCS) Networks are expected to drive future growth in both voice and data communication services. Th continue to improve on the current grade of service and to provide valued added intelligent services to the public, SS7 signaling is mandatory in both the wireless and lanoline telephone networks, as well as for inter-networking point of inter-connection. This paper highlights the essential elements of designing and implementing this SS7 interconnection from an engineering perspective. To design SS7 interconnects that supports a high level of network survivability, two design methods of SS7 network may be used, namely Alternate Routing and Combined Linkset. Since SS7 interconnects link up the landline and wireless carrier's SS7 networks, network security becomes an important issue. It is prudent for each provide carrier to implement network firewall to screen out the undesired SS7 messages. The trunking design at the point of termination between the landline and wireless networks is also discussed. A mixture of Type-2A elements and Type-2B interconnect voice-trunk design is desirable and is the preferred method for a large metropolitan area.
