This paper provides a Process Contractor1s overview on the influence of the present day Global market on his business strategy and project execution activity and how in a changing environment he has to address and adapt to new client requirements, philosophies, perceptions, evaluation criteria and contracting strategies. The influence of these strategies and requirements on suppliers is considered. The influence of the Global Market is to reduce both the total installed cost and the time taken to bring a process plant into operation after contract award. This presentation considers the various approaches being used to meet Client expectations. Among the currently perceived drivers in this challenge are: · a move from traditional prescriptive equipment specifications towards functional specifications to attempt to utilise more effectively the supplier's standard product; · plant conceptual design is more frequently carried out during the contractor's bid process to capture the best technical solutions; · new contracting strategies involving client-contractor-supplier alliances or partnering on projects to encourage the best use of skilled people, to obtain synergy, project execution efficiency and shorter equipment delivery periods; · increased scope of equipment packages and modularization to reduce site construction cost, through life cost analysis and closer involvement and commitment of the supplier in the on-plant performance of his equipment.
