Re-engineering for customised products

The result is the requirement to produce customised pumps with an almost infinite combination of features. Some non-standard products had always been manufactured and systems could cope, but with a higher proportion of "specials", these orders could no longer be handled by separate procedures. One objective of the paper is to discuss the changes to Engineering, order handling and Manufacturing responses required to produce 10,000 machines a year, which are tailored to a greater or lesser extent to meet customer needs, whilst generating the necessary margins for the business.
