Nuclear scintigraphic determination of gastric emptying

Techniques used to assess gastric emptying in small animal clinical patients include survey radiography, gastrointestinal contrast studies (liquid barium, iohexol,barium with food), radiopaque markers (barium impregnated polyethylene spheres; BIPS~R), and various absorption studies(d-xylose, polyethylene glycol, chromium labeled EDTA, etc.). Nuclear scintigraphy has advantages over these methods in that it is physiologic, non-invasive, and offers an easily quantifiable measure of gastric emptying. Radiopharmaceuticals can be used to label a variety of meal types without altering the diets' nutritional composition of digestibility.
