Lower respiratory disease is highly prevalent in performance horses, be it race horses, three-day event horses, or show horses. In most horses, lower respiratory disease is occult, that is, there are no overt clinical signs such as fever, nasal discharge, or coughing. However, various degrees of inflammation of the lower airways can be found in most performance horses, and in many cases the inflammation results in impaired pulmonary function.
