Musculoskeletal injury and lameness are common causes of morbidity and mortality in equine athletes. For example, they account for death of 80% of racehorses that die at California racetracks. This talk will focus on our understanding of the more chronic events that precede the acutely manifested overt injury in horses that undergo repetitive activities. Knowledge of the pathogenesis provides opportunities for intervention and injury prevention.
