Vastermalmsverket is the main production plant in the system of district heating in Falun. The system started to operate in 1984 based on industrial waste heat. The new plant, Vastermalmsverket, is a co-generation plant based on Bubbling Fluidized Bed Technology with biomass as fuel.The plant was completed in 1993 and handed over in May 1994.The plant is a small scale unit with an electrical output of 9 MW and a heat output of 30 MW for district heating and meets high emission requirements.The main criteria for building the plant have been- well known technology- unmanned operation- flue gas condensing* minimum environmental influence One of the environmental conditions for building the plant was that the ash in the long run should be returned to the forest to maintain the mineral balance in the soil. The plant has at the time of writing (October,1996) been in operation for 18 000 hrs and has to date met all the criteria mentioned above, including some R&D requirements for ash handling.
