The behaviour of three German lignites towards atmospheric oxygen was studied under simulated conditions using batch reactors. The reactor's atmosphere was then analyzed by gas chromatography. Several parameters such as grain size and sample mass were varied. The results are given and compared with those of a German bituminous coal. It was observed that the oxidation process is accompanied by a decomposition of the coal macromolecuie in case of the lignites. The type and amount of gases emitted are different for the two coal types. A model describing autocatalytic surface processes of lignites during storage in air is proposed.
