Bituminous coals under mild oxidation condition (temperatures of 45-120°C and oxygen pressure of 100-1000 millibar) emit low molecular weight organic gases in small but appreciable quantities via side reactions accompanying the major low temperturc oxidation. Two types of these side reactions are observed: a: Emission of ethylene which is linearly dependent on the amount of oxygen consumed and is stopped when no oxygen is available. b: Emission of methane and ethane which is fast (hours) when oxygen is present and after all oxygen has been consumed it slows down appreciably. The effect of oxygen partial pressure, partical size, coal mass and temperaure has been stadicd in batch reactor.
