Coal tninsformation resulting from a two-stage reduction or alkylation was studied using the following modifying agents: C_2H_5OD for reduction and CD_3I for alkylation. On the basis of spectroscopic studies it has been concluded that degradation of the coal structure occurring during reduction and alkylation mainly involves cleavage of the C-C bonds, and the majority of substituents introduced into the coal are attached to the aromatic rings via methylene bridges.
