Drop tube investigations of coal particle combustion were done at temperatures up to 1500 °C and pressures up to 20 bar. New methods of in situ particle observation like PDA and HR-CCD monitoring were developed. Velocity distributions and surface temperatures of burning particles were determined. Velocity and extent of devolatilisation are strongly reduced at high pressures. The apparent reaction rate coefficients showed significant pressure dependence.
