The paper describes the Nirex programme for the development of a deep repository for long-lived radioactive wastes in the United Kingdom. It describes the substantial progress that has been made over the last ten years and provides an up to date account of programme status. A particular emphasis is placed on the structured approach to decision-making and on programme management to ensure effective programme implementation.
