In this paper, the relation between a Mental Cutting Test (MCT) and examination performance in engineering graphics courses was discussed. The scores of pre- and post-MCT were statically analyzed. The students achieved significant gains in MCT scores after engineering graphics courses. Lower scoring students on the pre-MCT achieved higher gains. These results indicated that the engineering graphics courses improved the students' ability in manipulating their mental images of solid objects. The relation between scores on the MCT and on semester-end examinations was also analyzed. The semester-end examinations were structured on problems of descriptive geometry and engineering drawing. Low scoring students on the pre-MCT tended to score poorly on the semester-end examination of descriptive geometry. The correlations between scores on the MCT and on engineering drawing were not significant.
