A cross-sectional model for the propagation of vibration from a bored tunnel to the ground surface is described. This incorporates Finite Elements (FE) to model the tunnel and adjacent ground, and infinite elements to model the wave propagation away from this region. The use of the model in practice is discussed with some examples which show how the model can be used in the design of an underground railway.
