PROBING DARK ENERGY WITH TYPE Ia SUPERNOVAE

The energy density of the universe seems to be dominated by a mysteri-ous "dark-energy" which drives the acceleration of the expansion. This phe-nomenon was discovered by mapping out the history of cosmic expansion usingType Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as distance indicators. SNe Ia currently provideone of the best way to characterize the nature of dark energy, by placing tightlimits on its equation of state w p/ p. Current high-redshift supernova sur-veys, such as the 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey will deliver 1000 SN Ia de-tections with well-sampled griz light curves. Using this unprecedented dataset,a statistical precision of about 5% will be obtained on 11A, and w. In this contri-bution, I review the ongoing Type Ia surveys and present the recent constraintsobtained on the dark energy equation of state.
