Fusion welding of Ti-silicon carbide fibre (SiC{sub}f) reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) may lead to matrix/fibre reaction, thus degrading the material properties. Solid phase joints at lower temperatures in principle allow bonding without significant interfacial reaction. Solid state joining of Ti/SiC{sub}f MMC was studied, using resistance heating: currents were low and applied over long times, to avoid fusion. Process parameters and material surface condition were varied, and lap tensile shear tests were carried out, with metallographic and fractographic examination.
