The high-accuracy gauge control system discussed in this paper was applied to practical equipment at the tandem cold mill of Kawasaki Steel Corporation's Mizushima Works in 1987, making it possible to achieve high accuracy of + - 0.5 percenr or under in the steady region and + - 0.8 percent or under in non-steady regions in both longitudinal and transverse strip gauge accuracy, satisfying the original targets of this development project. Thereafter, the application of this technology was expanded to include other Kawasaki's tandem cold mills through new equipment construction or equipment upgrades (revamping). In particular, this work was a pioneering development in the recent progress achieved in strip gauge control technology for hard-to-roll cold-rolled steel materials.
