Silicon nitride containing various compositions ofas received TiC and TiN-coated TiC were hot pressed at 1800deg C for 1 h in a nitrogen atmosphere. In TiN-coatedTiC/Si_3N_4 composites, TiC reacted firstly with the TiNcoating to form a titanium carbonitride interlayer at 1450 deg C,which essentially reduced further reactions between TiC andSi_3N_4 and enhanced densification. TiN-coated TiC/Si_3N_4composites exhibited better densification, flexural strength andfracture toughness than those of as received TiC/Si_3N_4.
