Composites have been utilized extensively as interior components of mass transportation vehicles because they offer high functional strength and corrosion resistance and are relatively light-weight. Poor fire safety performance, however, has been a major disadvantage with traditional composites as they are flammable, and emit smoke and toxic gases upon combustion. The use of phenolic composites, which have excellent fire, smoke, and smoke toxicity (FST) properties, offers a solution to the fire safety performance problem.
