Turbulent boundary layer flow over two dimples in tandem is studied numerically using the FLUENT CFD software package. Previous research has indicated that dimpled surfaces enhance beat transfer comparably to three-dimensional protrusion-roughened surfaces, without significantly augmenting drag. A numerical study by the authors, (Kithcart and Klett [2000]) illustrated the physical mechanisms which create high heat flux in the vicinity of a single dimple. The influence of one dimple on another is now considered. Results from this study indicate that the same phenomena seen in the single dimple are present in the proximate element simulation. However, there appears to little effect from the upstream dimple on the dimple downstream. An experiment is planned in order to confirm the numerical results.
