Particle image velocimetry measurements of lateral flow fields in a rod bundle subchannel are employed to support single-phase heat transfer measurements. To examine the effect of swirling flow on heat transfer, split-vane pairs are placed in two subchannels surrounding the heat transfer measurement rod. Lateral flow field measurements are acquired for a single Reynolds number at seven axial locations downstream of the grid, and heat transfer data are collected for three Reynolds numbers at seventeen axial locations. The measured heat transfer rates show significant enhancement near the grid, a recovery region, and approach thermally developing turbulent pipe flow further downstream. These results are consistent with the flow field characteristics.
