The Turpan-Hami basin is located in the east of Xinjiang with an area of about 53 500 km~2. Tectonically it is in the southeast corner of the Kazakhstan plate, near the zone of amalgamation of the Kazakhstan, Sebrian and Tarim plates. The basin has been mainly in the state of compression since its very beginning of formation. The strike-sliping along the margin of the basin led to sinistral shear during the development of the basin; thus a lot of wrench structures were produced.
