The Ordos Basin is a world class coal basin lying in the west part of North China Craton, which is confined all around by giant faults. the peripheral areas show a certain mobility due to the effect of neighboring active or / and orogenic belts, while the tectonic feature of the basin itself is quite stable. Observation and statistics on the joint system have been carried out in the order of Upper Palaeozoic and Mesozoic strata during the field geological investigations. Meanwhile, the fold informations have also been arranged. Based on structure analysis, the occurrence of principle compressive stress axises from different area can be evaluated. In order to test the direction and pattern of exogenic process as well as the distribution condition of the stress within the basin, the Ordos basin is assumed to be a whole isotropic elastic-body. The simulation of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic stress field has been carried out based on the application of plane finite-element method by use of a computer.
