THE SUBSIDENCE HISTORY OF THE MESOZOIC AND CENOZOIC FORELAND BASINS IN CHINA AND ITS SIMULATION

Foreland basins belong to a system of shortening flexural basins that are closely related to the converging process of the plates. The trenchs, forearc basins and foreland basins developed in the process from subduction of oceanic crust to continent-continent collision or arc-continent collision. The foreland basins developed on the continent crust are classified by Dickinson (1976) into two types. One is called peripheral foreland basins formed on the subducted plate near the suture zone. The Cretaceous Xigaze forearc basin and its early Tertiary foreland basin are typical example. The other is developed in the front of the fold-thrust belt on the overriding plate formed by the inversion of a margin ocean and arc-continent collision behind the magma arc. The Pliogence-Pleistocene foreland basin in west Taiwan provides an example.
