The in-plane moire technique is used to investigate fracture and damage phenomena in the case of elastic-plastic material behaviour in the vicinity of a crack tip. The applied experimental technique is briefly discussed. The experiments are carried out at four point bending specimens made of nodular cast iron GGG 40.3. Analysing the measured displacement fields crack opening profiles along the crack flanks, the distribution of strain components, 65-equivalent and J-integral values are determined. All results are discussed from the point of view of continuum mechanics.
