CHICO: Chinchilla Range Management Assisted by Computer

A computer program has been designed in order to assist rancher's decisions making at the farm level for the general management and control of the entire Chinchilla ranch. In general, in Mexico there is a lack of reliable friendly programs, especially in Spanish, that make use of a minimum of hardware support and that can be used in the farm; for Chinchilla this problem is even worst. CHICO is a computer system formed by a data base in which animals, cages, production and economic data is saved. All this data can be easily manipulated by the rancher for generating periodic productive performance and financial analysis reports for decision making. CHICO has been implemented in Clipper under MS-DOS PC's environment. The structure of the system is arelational data model which allows a clear and efficient generation of graphics and text reports and queries. For easy use of the system, it has been designed in a pull down menu approach. User's assisted help is given totally on line. Later on, the system is expected to grow and be used as a tool support for genetic evaluation of animals. It is hope that this tool will be instrumental for integrating a regional improvement Chinchilla farm program for the local cooperative.
