Prestressed cast iron vessels are well suited as pressure vessels in nuclear and other applications. They are inherently safe against bursting. The paper describes the design features of prestressed cast iron vessels and the properties of its components. These components have been developed in several government supported research programs. One such vessel has been engineered, manufactured and licensed for service in a nuclear power plant. Several large scale tests of components and of a complete vessel have been successfully completed. They have shown that this type of vessel is feasible for nuclear reactors and that it can be designed for big diameters beyond the reach of steel vessels.
