This paper presents the finite element modelling method for representing a laser spot welded structure and the use of a modal based updating method to improve the dynamic behaviour of the finite element model. Three different types of element connectors which are RBE2, ACM2 and CWELD ELPAT format are used to construct the finite element model of the laser spot welded structure. The accuracy of the natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from the three models are compared with the measured counterparts. The measured dynamic behaviour is obtained using an impact hammer and roving accelerometers under free-free boundary conditions. NASTRAN SOL 200 is used for updating the finite element model in light of the measured results. In this study, it is found that using the modal based updating method provides an efficient and systematic way to successfully reconcile the CWELD based finite element model of the laser spot welded structure with the actual test structure.
