CONSISTENT IMPLEMENTATION OF EU DIRECTIVE 2015/996 IN SOFTWARE UNDER ISO 17534

The Environmental Noise Directive requires 28 countries to map the noise following a common noise assessment method that has just been adopted under Directive EU 2015/996. For the third round of strategic noise mapping in 2017 the use of the new common method is optional; however from the fourth round in 2022 its use is mandatory. Widespread implementation of the new method is envisaged through inclusion within noise mapping software systems used for the calculation of environmental noise levels. The series of standards under ISO 17534 "Acoustics - Software for the calculation of sound outdoors" sets out a framework to ensure that calculation methods can be implemented in a consistent manner with different software products producing the same results for the same situations. This paper will review the framework established under ISO 17534 and set out the steps required by the method developers, software developers and end users to meet the requirements of the standard.
