INFLUENCE OF ACOUSTIC ENVIRONMENT ON PEOPLE IN LARGE INTERIOR SPACES: A QUALITATIVE APPROACH

As many large buildings were built worldwide, it is necessary to study how the acoustic environment in those buildings affect people in order to improve the environment comfort in them. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of acoustic environment on people in large interior spaces through a qualitative approach. By grounded theory, 26 participants completed the interviews which consisted of open questions and semi-structured questions in three large spaces. The results showed most interviewees referred to various sound sources, noise, serious low frequency sound, communication obstacle and emotional change when they were in those places. It was proved that the acoustic environment in large spaces could affect people's emotion experience, cognitive process and behavior response. And people's tolerance, expectation and other personal attributes also had apparent effects on subjective perception of acoustic environment in large interior spaces according to the results.
