Water-lubricated elastomeric bearing is a new type of sterntube bearing and its behaviour is greatly affected by friction-induced vibration. Previous investigations were dominated by linear analytical models to emulate the actual bearing dynamics and predict stability of the models and experimental tests. In the paper, nonlinear dynamic model of the elastomeric bearing has been set up with single-degree-of-freedom system, aimed at reaching the nature of friction-induced vibration. The influence of the parameters of friction expression on stability of the model is analysed. Experimental investigation is conducted and friction-velocity curve for bearing sample is acquired. With piecewise linear interpolation, friction is expressed as piecewise function of velocity. Based on the piecewise function, the importance of damping ratio is evaluated.
