摘要

Scattering of sound by atmospheric turbulence is well-established and incorporated into many outdoor sound propagation codes. However the theory, developed initially by Tartarski and since extended by others, strictly applies for tonal signals, and non-linear terms arising from finite bandwidth are ignored. Recently this has presented some challenges, as acoustic wind profiler designs have attempted to use signal coding methods commonly used in other contexts. In this paper we sketch the physics underlying the existing scattering theory, and show where the non-linearities arise. This allows us to come up with simple guidelines on bandwidth limitations for pulse-coding to work, and also provides insights into the treatment of turbulent scattering in propagation models.
