A brief discussion on some of the elements of surface alteration that affect the strength of machined components under dynamic loading is presented. Traditional machining methods can change the the nature or characteristics of the surface that could affect the fatigue strength of the components. It can be summarized that cutting conditions and machining methods that produce high tensile surface residual stresses, high surface roughness, low surface hardness, and surfaces with maximum defects or disturbance should be avoided if possible in favor of those that can produce compressive or low tensile surfaces residual stresses, low surface roughness, high surface hardness, and surfaces with minimum defects or disturbance.
