Technology developed and first implemented inthe United Kingdom enables very low grade aluminum scrapscontaining oils, organics, plastics and ferrous metals to bedirectly charged, without pretreatment, into a unique meltingfurnace. The system has been in full scale production for overthree years. The oxy-fuel-based furnace design incorporatesinternal afterburning in the furnace's hot zone, producingexcellent thermal efficiency and very low emissions. Thefurnace is inherently low in NOx.This paper will provide both theoretical background andextensive operating results for this new melting concept.Applications describing both purpose built new furnaces andretrofits of existing reverberatory furnaces will be presented.Extensive operating emissions data will be presented.
